What You Need to Know About Head Injuries After Your Truck Crash

Unfortunately, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the more common injuries sustained in trucking accidents. In fact, of the estimated 1.7 million Americans who will suffer a TBI this year, about 17.1% of them will sustain their injuries in a traffic accident. Only falls cause more brain injuries.

Even if you have no symptoms right away, you may have suffered a serious brain injury.

What is a TBI?

A traumatic brain injury is an injury to the brain that causes some disruption to the functioning of the brain. These injuries can be caused in a truck accident in two ways:

  1. By a blow to the head. In a traffic accident in Miami or anywhere in South Florida, it’s not uncommon for passengers to be thrown around. They may be thrown from the vehicle or crash against the interior of the vehicle. Items inside the car can become airborne and hit passengers in the head. In any of these cases, the jolt to the skull can cause the soft tissue of the brain to bounce against the inside of the skull. This can cause swelling, bruising, and bleeding, which can damage the brain and can prove potentially life-threatening to the patient.
  2. By a penetrating injury. A less common injury in a truck accident can happen if a piece of metal or other sharp object enters a passenger’s skull. This can happen if the passenger is thrown from the vehicle or if something crashes through the windshield.

Brain injuries can be short-term, severe, or relatively mild. Even a relatively mild TBI that results in recovery, however, can result in confusion, pain, loss of consciousness, and a long recovery time. A serious, permanent brain injury can mean that a patient needs around-the-clock care for the rest of their life.

Charlie is a very skilled attorney that advocates hard for his clients. But the best part is he is an all around great guy. He cares about helping and doing what is right for people and his community. And he is not afraid to fight against those who do wrong or against threats to our world. He is fluent in Spanish as well. Do yourself a favor and call him. Andy

I had a lawyer on another case and I never spoke to the lawyer and I hated that I never knew what was going on in my case. Mr. Flaxman was in constant communication with me, explained everything to me, and his staff was really great too. My phone calls were always returned immediately. It was refreshing to be able to speak to my attorney personally. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Flaxman as an attorney to anyone who has been in an accident. Gloria
