Dealing with Medical Complications After Your Truck Accident

Serious injuries are unfortunately quite common after a trucking accident in Hollywood and other South Florida communities. Not everyone is fortunate enough to walk away from a commercial truck accident with no injuries.

But injuries are not the only thing that plaintiffs need to worry about. In some cases, in addition to the injuries sustained, patients suffer from additional complications that can make their injuries even more catastrophic.

Common complications that can result from a serious accident such as a trucking accident can include:

  • Complications related to the eyes. Eye injuries can lead to detached retinas, inflammations, infections, cataracts, glaucoma, blindness, and other severe issues.
  • Complications related to brain injuries. Even minor brain injuries can lead to seizures, mood swings, depression, personality changes, behavioral changes, trauma, and a host of other difficulties.
  • Heart attacks, brain injuries, and stroke. Unfortunately, people who have sustained a severe spinal cord injury or are in a wheelchair following a catastrophic injury may be more prone to injuries to the lungs, pneumonia, heart attacks, strokes, and other complications.
  • Permanent weakness to the joints. Any injuries to joints can lead to weakness, dislocation, additional injuries, and even arthritis.
  • Loss of muscle tone or function. Any injuries to the muscles or any sort of catastrophic injuries such as a spinal cord injury which limits mobility can result in atrophy of the muscles or injuries to muscles. This can result in long-term weakness, chronic pain, or shortening of the muscles, which can lead to loss of function.
  • Hypertension. Any injuries that lead to injuries of the kidneys can eventually lead to high blood pressure or kidney injuries that require dialysis. Injuries that lead to paralysis can also lead to hypertension.
  • Organ failure. Anytime there is a catastrophic injury to key organs, a patient may in the future experience vulnerabilities and may even experience organ failure, including failure of the lungs, kidneys, liver, or heart.
  • Sterility. Any injuries to the reproductive organs can lead to sterility or infertility.
  • Gangrene infection. Anytime that swelling or a severe wound happens, patients may suffer from gangrene and may even have to undergo amputation.
  • Infection. Sometimes, hospital mistakes made or simply the stress the body experiences after severe injury can lead to a greater vulnerability to infections, including serious and life-threatening infections.
  • Premature death. People who suffer a catastrophic injury, such as a brain injury or spinal cord injury, may be more vulnerable to pneumonia, infections, and other medical complications that can lead to premature death. People who are in wheelchairs, for example, may be more vulnerable to blood clots, urinary tract disorders, bed sores, osteoporosis, embolisms, and other conditions that can be life-threatening.

In some cases, complications don’t emerge until months or many years after an initial injury. Some patients are fortunate enough not to suffer any serious complications after their injury. In other cases, patients suffer lifelong difficulties. There’s no way to tell who will suffer serious complications, and attorneys representing a plaintiff will need to consider the possibility that in the future a plaintiff may suffer from medical problems due to their current injuries.

If you have suffered an injury in a trucking accident, it’s important to consult with a personal injury attorney who will consider your increased risk of complications in the future and will take these into consideration when pursuing compensation on your behalf. I had a lawyer on another case and I never spoke to the lawyer and I hated that I never knew what was going on in my case. Mr. Flaxman was in constant communication with me, explained everything to me, and his staff was really great too. My phone calls were always returned immediately. It was refreshing to be able to speak to my attorney personally. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Flaxman as an attorney to anyone who has been in an accident. Gloria
